The Steinwarder begins virtually at the Bretterbude and opens up from there to the west. It is located north of the town of Heiligenhafen and was only connected to the mainland at the beginning of the Heiligenhafen cliffs until the artificial link was built. In the 1950s, a fixed connection to the mainland and the former island of Graswarder was also created near the harbour.
This measure created the inland lake that still exists today, which despite its name is connected to the Baltic Sea and still contains salt water. Good for everyone: despite the construction work, the Steinwarder has retained its original island character to this day.
If you walk eastwards from the Bretterbude, you will reach the Graswarder. Together with the Steinwarder, this forms an elongated peninsula with a 230-hectare nature reserve. Incidentally, there are some pretty cool, very old, thatched half-timbered and wooden houses along the nature reserve, which are listed buildings.
FYI: Apart from a few spots on Sylt, Graswarder is now considered the most expensive piece of land in Schleswig-Holstein.
Let me tell you: The old municipal harbour characterises the townscape of Heiligenhafen like nothing else. Here you can still meet real harbour masters and watch people fishing and angling. Think that sounds a bit outdated? Then come and see for yourself! We guarantee a really rustic and honest atmosphere - absolutely worth a visit.
The warehouses in the eastern part of the harbour are still a port of call for cargo ships from many countries. Grain, fertiliser, stone, gravel and other goods are handled there all year round. Incidentally, the largest deep-sea fishing fleet in Europe is located on the western side of the harbour! In total, more than 65 fishing boats are based here.
Speaking of fish. Hungry? Then why not try some of the freshly caught delicacies - right on the spot!
Our pride and joy: the beach at Heiligenhafen. Admittedly, we don't have much to do with its creation, but we do have a lot to do with its use. As we have skilfully placed our chic wooden hut right by the sea, there is virtually no way around it. Unspoilt and in all its splendour, it opens up before our gates - and leads you for miles along the coast.
It is the perfect spot for water sports on the Baltic Sea for all water rats and aerial acrobats among you. Whether kitesurfing or sailing - everything is possible here! And if you don't fancy board sports, simply take a long walk and get a breath of Baltic Sea air. Does you good and calms you down. That's a promise.

Walk across the water: The Heiligenhafen pier makes it possible! And it's worth a visit - because from the pier you not only have a gigantic view of the sea, but also of Heiligenhafen's coastline. Water as far as the eye can see and the safety of the mainland behind you.
At a total of 435 metres, the adventure pier lives up to its name: the bridge is not just a bridge, but has conveniently thought of everyone. There are children's play areas for the little ones, some seating and lounging options for the big ones, glassed-in sections for explorers, a bathing deck for the hard-working, a sea lounge for pleasure-seekers and public toilets for everyone - here on the beach in Heiligenhafen, we are prepared. That's a good thing.
Yes, harbour, you might think. You know one, you know them all. But we can proudly and immodestly proclaim it: Heiligenhafen Marina is one of the largest and most beautiful marinas on the Baltic coast.
Spread over 14 jetties, the marina has a total of 1,000 berths and is a real eye-catcher - close to the town centre. In fact, it is only a 5-minute walk to the town centre, the Baltic Sea beach or Graswarder.
Also interesting: the adventure pier! Not only a great photo motif, but also a perfect vantage point on the sea.
